The 2025 Unity Cup is set to reignite the long-standing rivalry between Ghana and Nigeria, popularly referred to as the Jollof derby.
Ghanaian and Nigerian residents in the United Kingdom will converge at Brentford FC’s Gtech Stadium in West London, England, to watch their respective countries lock horns.
Though Ghana holds the advantage in the head-to-head record over their Nigerian counterparts, they lost to their frenemy in Morocco in an international friendly on March 22, 2024.
According to seasoned sports journalist Prince Annang, the Black Stars can not afford a defeat to the Super Eagles, considering the encouraging form they have been enjoying.
“It will be difficult for Ghanaians to swallow a loss at this stage, especially against the Super Eagles of Nigeria. Nigerians are looking for every opportunity to do what we did to them some time ago,” Mr Annang said on the launch of the Unity Cup on Max TV.
The competition presents a great opportunity for the fringe players to showcase their talent to the international market.
Jamaica would kick off the tournament against West Indies rivals Trinidad and Tobago before the much-anticipated West African derby between Ghana and Nigeria on May 28, 2025.
