Winning Grammys with Dance Hall or a Foreign genre is no achievement for Ghana – Kumi Guitar

Date:

Highlife musician Nana Yaw Kumi has said that if any Ghanaian musician wins a Grammy with Dance Hall or any other foreign genre Ghana has not won anything.

Popularly known as Kumi Guitar, the Zylofon music artist said “You see this Grammys we talk about, if a Ghanaian Dance Hall artist or any other foreign genre wins a Grammy, we have not done anything or achieved anything for Ghana.”

Kumi Guitar, speaking to Alex Kwesi Crassie and Babie Adjoa Dappah, in an interview on the Max Morning show, said “Ghana wouldn’t have won anything, however, if a highlife artist with a highlife music wins a Grammy then we can proudly say Ghana has won a Grammy.”

He further said that “I am pushing, may be it might be me. The likes of Wiz kid and others who have won the Grammys had people like Fela Kuti and others who went there to lay the path and make the way and started it to establish their music there to pave way for them. Then they (Wiz kid and others) also came to invest and put more effort to gain the Grammys.”

According to Kumi Guitar, it all depends on contents and that all the Africans that have won the Grammys went there with their original music that portrayed their culture and identity and not with the foreign music. Hence our content, our style of writing and sound quality should be good.

“it is all about contents, all the Africans that have won the Grammys went there with their own original native music and not with the foreign music. So let us be us, our content, our style of writing, our beats and sound quality should be good,” he said.

“Then after that investors come in. We can’t do without investors,” he added.

Kumi Guitar released his first project for 2021, Titled ‘Kro kro me’ (Pamper me), featuring on the new single is Ghanaian self-acclaimed dancehall king, Shatta Wale.
