Some fixtures grab attention; others grip emotions. The Unity Cup semi-final between Ghana and Nigeria does both.
On Wednesday night at the Gtech Community Stadium in London, Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles face their fiercest rivals with a clear goal: beat Ghana and reach the final against Jamaica.
It’s only Chelle’s third match in charge since taking over in January, but signs of a defined style are emerging. The Franco-Malian coach is likely to stick with his 4-4-2 diamond formation, already tested against Rwanda and Zimbabwe in March.
Goalkeeper: Nwabali Undisputed No.1
With Maduka Okoye and Amas Obasogie absent, Stanley Nwabali remains the obvious pick. Since his AFCON breakthrough, he has brought calm and shot-stopping strength, though his distribution still divides opinion.
Defence: Ismaila, Ajayi, Ogbu, Onyemaechi
- RB: Sadiq Ismaila is expected to start ahead of Felix Agu. His pace and growing maturity make him a solid replacement for the unavailable Ola Aina.
- CBs: Semi Ajayi returns to partner Igho Ogbu, who impressed Chelle in training. Ogbu, a standout at Slavia Prague, is poised for his debut.
- LB: Bruno Onyemaechi’s mix of tactical awareness and attacking intent gives him the edge over Agu for now.
Midfield: Ndidi Anchors, Musa or Papa Daniel to Create
- DM: Wilfred Ndidi remains central to Chelle’s plans, offering stability in the pivot role.
- CAM: With Alex Iwobi missing, Ahmed Musa could step into a deeper creative role. But NPFL star Papa Daniel, with four league goals, is pushing for a surprise start.
- Wide Roles: Moses Simon and Samuel Chukwueze are likely to fill the LCM and RCM spots, with Simon possibly returning to the flank depending on tactical needs.
Attack: Dessers Leads, Tella Supports
With Osimhen and Lookman out, Cyriel Dessers takes the lead up front. The Scottish league’s top scorer offers movement and hold-up play.
Partnering him could be Bayer Leverkusen’s Nathan Tella, whose pressing and finishing make him an ideal strike partner in Chelle’s two-man attack.
