Black Stars head coach Otto Addo believes the 2025 Unity Cup offers the perfect opportunity to assess his squad more closely ahead of crucial competitive fixtures.
Ghana’s senior national team is currently in London for the revived tournament, with Addo naming a 23-man squad on Monday, May 26. Notable absentees include Mohammed Kudus, Thomas Partey, and Antoine Semenyo.
The team, however, features a mix of returning players and five debutants.
“These two matches are just as important as the World Cup qualifiers in September,” Addo told ghanafa.org. “It’s the ideal time to evaluate players we’ve monitored over recent months.”
He emphasized the importance of building a cohesive unit over time and sees the Unity Cup as a chance to foster competition by giving young players equal opportunities to prove themselves.
“We’re not focused on individuals—we’re building a team. That’s why I’m giving these young players the chance to step up and potentially become key members of the squad,” he added.
Addo is also keen to reintegrate players returning from long absences and test new talents in a competitive environment.
Ghana will face Nigeria in the semifinals on May 28. The winner advances to the final, while the loser plays in the third-place playoff. Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica are the other participating nations.
