The Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana has issued a strong warning, declaring it will suspend the licenses of any member found involved in the illicit trade of opioids. With the rise in opioid abuse, the government has launched a nationwide crackdown to protect the country’s health.
Speaking to the press on Friday, April 11, Dr. Samuel Donkor, President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana, emphasized the organization’s commitment to combatting this growing crisis. He reiterated that both community pharmacies and wholesalers found dealing in illicit opioids would face the revocation of their licenses. Pharmacists who engage in such illegal activities will also have their licenses suspended.
Dr. Donkor confirmed that the Pharmacy Council would take a strict approach, with zero tolerance for any involvement in the illicit opioid trade. He further stressed that the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana will continue its public education efforts while enforcing strict regulatory measures to ensure that ethical standards in the pharmacy profession are upheld.
As part of these efforts, the Society is working closely with government agencies to prevent the distribution and abuse of opioids, aiming to safeguard the public’s health and wellbeing.
