Donald Trump and Gustavo Petro are at loggerheads over the “illegal immigrants” who were denied entry into the South American country.
Trump threatened to impose increased importation tariffs on Colombia after Petro ordered two U.S. military planes carrying deportees to not touch down in Bogota.
The two engaged in a series of heated exchanges of words before the White House announced on Sunday that the Colombian government has agreed to its terms.
The U.S. has held off its threats on increasing tariffs on Colombia, but other penalties, including visa sanctions, will remain effective until the first plane arrives in Colombia.
Petro was defiant against “white enslaver, Trump, retaliating with equally increased tariffs of 25 percent which he threatened would increase to 50 percent on the U.S. just as they had done earlier.
However, Colombia’s foreign ministry disclosed in a statement that said “We have overcome the impasse with the United States government,” as they would accept the deportation flights, with the U.S. guaranteeing dignified conditions for the Colombian deportees on the flights.
