Over GH₵80m collected in betting tax; Amin Adam was wrong – Finance Minister

Date:

Ghana’s Finance Minister, Ato Forson, has refuted claims by former Finance Minister Mohammed Amin Adam that the previous administration never implemented the betting tax.

Speaking at a press conference on March 11, after presenting the new government’s first budget and abolishing the e-levy and betting tax, Dr. Amin Adam argued that the NPP government never enforced the tax on lottery and sports betting winnings.

He described the NDC’s claim of abolishing it as deceptive, stating, “We never collected Betting Tax. So to say you abolished something that was never implemented is misleading.”

In response, Ato Forson, in an interview on JoyNews’ PM Express, countered that the tax was enforced in the latter half of 2024. “My checks show over GH₵80 million has been collected from betting tax year-to-date. The facts on the ground do not support his assertion,” he stated.
