Tyson Fury suffered his first ever professional loss in a split-decision points defeat on a dramatic night in Saudi Arabia as Oleksandr Usyk became boxing’s first four-belt undisputed heavyweight champion.
The British fighter Fury started off strong on a grand stage on a night that would go down in history, but after a Usyk attack in the ninth round, he was given a standing 10 count and saved by the bell.
A stony-faced Usyk broke down in tears when he was officially declared the winner, but Fury seemed certain of victory during the tense wait for the scorecards to be read out.
The third judge gave Fury a score of 114-113, while the scorecards for the Ukrainian read 115-112 and 114-113.
Usyk adds the WBC belt to his WBA, WBO, and IBF holdings by snatching it from Fury.
Later this year, both fighters will have the chance to compete in a scheduled rematch.
