The National Sports Authority (NSA) has announced a suspension of all boxing activities in Ghana.
This directive, according to the Director General of the NSA, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, is the best pending the post mortem results of popular boxer Ernest Akushey, aka ‘Bahubali’.
Contrary to his denial of the directive when the news broke on Thursday, September 25, in an interview on Max FM’s Sports Pack, Mr Ampofo Ankrah and the NSA have recognised the need to safeguard boxing.
On Tuesday, September 23, Bahubali passed away, shocking the boxing community 11 days after losing to Jacob Dickson in the eighth round of a super middleweight contest.
Retired boxer and current promoter Ayitey Powers, who had been preparing for a boxing bonanza dubbed “Bahubali Memorial Fight Night” in honour of the late boxer who was once under his management, disclosed he would have to be compensated if the directive is made effective.
However, while speaking on Max FM’s Sports Pack, he revealed he had received assurances from Mr Ampofo Ankrah that reports of the directive, before it was made official on Friday, September 26, were untrue.
The NSA has therefore pledged, together with its partners, to guide the safe, responsible and sustainable return of boxing in Ghana.
