A Certified EQ Coach, James Kwesi Addison, has attributed the careless and corrupt character of politicians in the country to the sitting arrangement in schools.
According to him, the sitting arrangement in the Ghana Education System has prevented Ghanaians from growing empathy for each other.
Expressing his view on the topic “Developing Your Mindset” on the Max Morning Show in Accra on Friday, Addison said culturally, Ghanaians were empathic, but the kind of education they acquired had killed that empathy fiber in them.
He said the sitting arrangement in schools in which a student turned his or her back against the other had gone a long way toward developing a negative mindset in learners; thus, when they grew to become parliamentarians, they equally turned their backs on their constituents.
“Our sitting arrangement that a student turns his back against the other is the reason when they grow to become Members of Parliament (MPs), they turn their back on us,” Addison said.
Citing a Montessori school he visited, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Addison International stated that five pupils were sitting on a round table, and he asked three of them questions, which they all answered.
However, the fourth pupil failed to answer when he asked for his name, so he moved to the fifth pupil to ask his name.
“Now this child didn’t mention his name; he mentioned the fourth one’s name, and I asked the teacher what she thinks has happened here.” he queried.
Addison said the child saw the demeanor of his colleague and felt pity for him, so he supported his colleague and mentioned his name.
“This means he assisted his friend; he has shared what he has with the child and has supported the child. That is what we ought to do,” he added.
Moving forward, Addison proposed that education should be customized to suit Ghanaian culture.
