Dr Randy Abbey, chairman of Ghana Premier League side Heart of Lions, and an Executive Council member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has defended bonuses paid to members of the management committee of the Black Stars.
In January 2023, Alhaji Karim Grunsah confirmed rumors that members of the management committee of the Black Stars received $100,000 each as an appearance fee at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where the team failed to make it past the group stages.
This admission by the King Faisal owner caused a massive stir on social media given the disappointment at the global showpiece, as he insisted the members deserved the quoted amount.
Appearing before the Paliamentary Select Committee on Sports, Dr Randy Abbey questioned why there is a thought of the members not deserving to be rewarded when an achievement is made but often attacked when things are in disarray.
“People hold people responsible when there is failure; why must these people not be recognized when there is success? If you think that it is okay to hold people responsible when there is failure, why must you not see it that you must reward these people when there is success?” he said on Tuesday, October 1, at the Parliament House.
Dr Abbey echoed the president of the GFA, Kurt Okraku and Alhaji Grunsah’s defense of the monies paid to the members.
