A Nantes fan died before the start of their 1-0 win over Nice in the French Ligue 1 on Saturday afternoon.
Before Saturday’s match, several cars carrying Nice supporters were ambushed by Nantes supporters as they were making their way to the Beaujoire stadium.
The man, 31, died, according to Renaud Gaudeul, public prosecutor for Nantes. “A wound in the back, which could correspond to a bladed weapon” was inflicted against the victim.
The prosecutor announced that a 35-year-old driver of one of the vehicles had been taken into prison and that an inquiry into “voluntary manslaughter” had been launched.
