The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has declared a cholera outbreak after confirming nine cases in the country. The first case emerged in the Ada West District of Greater Accra on October 4, 2024, when an individual presented symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain after attending a funeral in Ada East.
As of October 11, a total of nine cholera cases have been reported in both districts. In response, several public health measures have been initiated, including:
– Activation of Public Health Emergency Management Committees at national, regional, and district levels.
– Deployment of a multi-sectoral Public Health Emergency Rapid Response Team, including representatives from various agencies.
– Ongoing outbreak investigations and environmental assessments.
– Alerts issued to all health facilities nationwide.
– Contact tracing and follow-up activities.
– Training for healthcare workers in the affected areas on cholera case management.
– Daily community case searches.
– Enforcement of strict Infection Prevention and Control measures in health facilities.
– Establishment of a cholera oral rehydration center for mild cases.
The public is urged to maintain personal hygiene to help prevent the spread of the disease.
