John Mensah: I still can’t forget Ghana vs Uruguay match

Date:

John Mensah, a former Black Stars defender, admitted that he is still haunted by Ghana’s 2010 World Cup loss to Uruguay.

John Mensah, the captain of Ghana in the game, missed his penalty kick in the shootouts, while Dominic Adiyiah, the captain of Uruguay, missed his as well, sending Uruguay through to the World Cup semifinals.

Twelve years after the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, former Sunderland player John Mensah claimed on Max TV that he still finds it impossible to forget what happened in that game.

Speaking in an interview  on Max TV, John Mensah said “It’s very difficult for me to forget about our game against Uruguay, the kind of support we had from the whole continent and Suarez denied us, I can’t forget about it.”

In an effort to secure Africa’s first World Cup semifinal appearance, the Black Stars took on Uruguay in the quarterfinals of the 2010 tournament.

Sulley Muntari of Ghana scored the game’s first goal, but Diego Forlan of Uruguay tied it up with a set piece.

Ghana was given a penalty with minutes remaining in the game, but Asamoah Gyan missed it because his strike hit the goalpost.
