#GPLWEEK8 PREVIEW: Kotoko Aims to Weaken Holy Stars, Legon Cities Seek First Win vs. Accra Lions, Dreams FC Look for Victory Against Young Apostles

Date:

In-form Asante Kotoko is on the hunt for their fourth consecutive victory in the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League as they prepare to face struggling Basake Holy Stars at CAM Park.

The Porcupines are one of only three unbeaten teams, alongside Gold Stars and Berekum Chelsea, boasting three straight wins, including a recent triumph over defending champions Samartex. Currently sitting second on the table with 14 points, a win on Sunday could elevate them to the top, depending on Gold Stars’ match against Hearts of Oak.

Coach Prosper Narteh Ogum’s side will be confident against the newly promoted Holy Stars, who have faltered after a promising start. After earning four points from their first three matches, Holy Stars have only managed three points in their last five games and now sit 13th in the league with seven points, just above the relegation zone.

This match marks the first encounter between Basake Holy Stars and Asante Kotoko. Kotoko remains unbeaten after six matches, scoring in each but never more than once, while Holy Stars have struggled, recording four losses this season and winning just one of their three home games.

The hosts’ coach, Abdulai Gazale, a former assistant trainer at Kotoko, is eager to turn things around, stating, “We can’t afford to lose two consecutive games.” In contrast, Ogum cautions his players against underestimating their opponents, emphasizing the need for a serious approach to every match.

Meanwhile, Dreams FC continues their search for a first win of the season as they face newly promoted Young Apostles in Wenchi. Both teams are in the relegation zone, with Young Apostles holding six points from seven matches and Dreams still looking for their first victory after eight games. Young Apostles have managed only one win, three draws, and three losses, while Dreams have drawn four and lost three, scoring just two goals all season.

A win for either side could lift them out of the relegation zone, making this clash crucial for both teams’ fortunes.

Additionally, Legon Cities will aim for their first victory of the season against Accra Lions at the University of Ghana Stadium. Currently at the bottom of the league with just one point, they hope to overcome a series of setbacks, including a recent 3-0 loss to Berekum Chelsea. Accra Lions, sitting fifth in the standings, seek their second win of the campaign as they aim to rediscover the form that brought them success last season. The two teams have faced each other three times since the 2020/21 season, with each holding a win, a draw, and a loss against the other.

As the league progresses, every match becomes pivotal for teams striving to improve their standings and avoid relegation.
