Ghana has lost one of its most influential business leaders, Alhaji Asoma Banda, who passed away in the early hours of Saturday, March 1, 2025.
The shipping and aviation magnate was a trailblazer in Ghana’s business landscape, leaving behind a legacy of entrepreneurship and economic transformation.
The news was confirmed by Nigerian businessman Dele Momodu, who paid tribute on Instagram, acknowledging Alhaji Banda’s immense contributions and the unwavering support of his wife, Baaba Asoma-Banda.
Prominent Ghanaian businessman Sir Sam Jonah described Alhaji Banda as a true patriot and national asset, emphasizing his impact on Ghana’s shipping and aviation industries.
“This morning, Ghana has lost a true patriot, a visionary entrepreneur, and a giant of industry.”
Jonah praised Banda’s transformational role in the economy, particularly through Antrak Airlines, which revolutionized domestic air travel. He also highlighted Banda’s bold attempt to revive Ghana Airways, showcasing his faith in Ghanaian business potential.
Reflecting on his challenges, Jonah noted how politics and business in Ghana often clashed, creating obstacles for visionary entrepreneurs like Banda.
Beyond business, Alhaji Banda was also recognized as a historian and mentor, who inspired young entrepreneurs with lessons from his humble beginnings.
