Reginald Asante, coach of Juventus Academy Ghana and former Liberty Professionals striker, has called on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to employ former Black Stars forward Felix Aboagye to teach Black Stars strikers how to finish clinically in front of goal.
According to Asante, the current Black Stars team is blessed with raw talent, pace, and creativity, but consistently lacks precision in the final third. “We need someone who has been there before, someone who understands the art of goal-scoring at the highest level,” he told local sports media. “That person is Felix Aboagye.”
Felix Aboagye, who played for the Black Stars in the 1990s and early 2000s, was known for his lethal finishing and positional intelligence. He enjoyed a prolific career that included stints in Egypt, Qatar, and India, and was part of Ghana’s squad for major tournaments like the Africa Cup of Nations and the Olympics. Asante believes this wealth of experience qualifies Felix Aboagye to teach Black Stars strikers the nuances of top-level forward play.
“Strikers like Antoine Semenyo, Jordan Ayew, and Inaki Williams have potential, but they need mentorship,” Asante stressed. “If we are serious about competing in the World Cup and AFCON, we must get our strikers finishing better.”
This suggestion comes at a time when the Black Stars have faced criticism for their lack of goals in competitive matches, especially during recent AFCON qualifiers and international friendlies.
The GFA has previously introduced specialist coaches for various roles within the technical teams of the national teams. Incorporating a goal-scoring coach may not be far-fetched, especially if legends like Aboagye are willing to contribute.
