The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has raised concerns of power theft and illegal electricity connections, warning that the situation is destroying the power supply and costing the company millions of cedis.
“These illegal activities place undue stress on transformers and frequently lead to equipment damage and power interruptions.”
Mr Emmanuel Ankomah, the General Manager of ECG’s Tema Regional Office, stated in an interview.
He mentioned that between the last quarter of 2025 and the first quarter of 2026, eight transformers were disrupted, with each
replacement costing close to GHC200,000. He also disclosed that some individuals disguise themselves as ECG personnel to gain access to installations and carry out theft.
Mr Ankomah appealed to the public to support efforts to safeguard power infrastructure by reporting suspicious activities.
“We urge the public to remain vigilant. Anyone seen tampering with transformers, particularly at odd hours, should be reported to ECG or the nearest police station,” he declared.
