#BlackStars: Government took USD$5.2M of World Cup money – Henry Asante Twum

Date:

Henry Asante Twum, the Ghana Football Association’s director of communications, emphasized once more that Ghana earned USD $9 million from the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar after the country’s elimination from the group stage.

Also, penalties accumulated during the competition were deducted from the stated sum. First, this was revealed on Angel TV by the FA Communications Director, who stated, “We paid USD$80,000 for yellow card acquisitions at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.”

Following the deductions, the prize money was lowered to USD $8.2 million, which Henry Asante Twum claims was submitted to the Ghanaian government.

“We made USD$9 million from the World Cup from exiting the group stages but of course when you exit from the World Cup, it takes six months for FIFA to get back to you. They told us there’ll be deductions for cautions, yellow cards etc. In the end we had about USD$8.2 million. We reported to government about how much we accrued after exiting from the group stage.”

USD5.2 million was sent FA to government and kept USD$2.8 million for World Cup legacy projects under the supervision of the Sports Ministry per the latter’s instructions.

“Government instructed us to send USD5.2 million back to them to offset the investment they made in the World Cup and invest the remaining USD$8.2 million into the World Cup legacy project signed by the Chief of Staff, Frema Opare. They said we should invest it under the a World Cup legacy project under the supervision of the Ministry of Youth and Sports,” he stressed.
