There have been numerous reactions to the recent additions to the Black Stars technical team by the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
One of such reactions is from experienced Ghanaian coach Vincent Abiwu, describing the set-up of the team as a “funny formation.”
The Ghana Football Association, following the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers fiasco, has made a number of significant changes to the technical setup of the Black Stars.
The addition of Desmond Ofei, Winfried Schafer, and Belgians, Kris Perquy and Gregory De Grauwe, is aimed at improving the on-field performance, especially with Ghanaians expecting the team to earn qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“It is a mixed setup—talking about inexperience, to retirement, and in-between coaches like our local dance (ashiagbekor), which involves seven different dance steps.
The formation of the technical team is a little bit funny, unless they create an environment that would push themselves. But this setup will give us problems,” he said on the Sports Pack show on Max FM.
Abiwu expressed his little belief in the new additions, questioning the experience of Desmond Ofei, who won gold for Ghana at the 2023 African Games, the need to hire a 75-year-old German, and why Otto Addo is still at post.
“The last time he worked was in the 2021-22 soccer season. He is 75 years old, far from the African terrain, down to the head coach, who uses the national team to build his experience.
Desmond Ofei has got the license alright, but his major job is with Ghana (U-20) and still a student of the game.
We are in crisis. When we are in crisis, we don’t need young guys to solve the problem now,” he added.
