Indigenous singer Osei Korankye has expressed the need for the authorities to ensure names of towns and cities are mentioned rightly to maintain their traditional, cultural, and historical meanings.
According to him, many towns and cities are losing their cultural significance due to the changing of its name pronunciation in recent years.
Speaking in an exclusive interview on the Max Morning Show in Accra on Friday, Osei Korankye noted that names given to towns have historical significance, and changing the pronunciation of the names also changes its historical meaning.
”Today Kyebi has turned into Kebi, Nkawkaw has turned into Nkakau. I will plead with the traditional leaders and authorities to ensure that the relevance of those names are maintained.”
”Because, the history behind those names holds a cultural significance. As the name changes, it also goes a long way to change its historical significance and the meaning for which it was named. This does not help at all,” he lamented.
Moving forward, Osei Korankye advocated the need for the culture and tradition of the country to be observed while being pragmatic about historical names and their spellings.
