Italian international of Ghanaian descent Mario Balotelli is reportedly considering terminating his contract with Genoa due to limited playing time at the club.
Since joining the Rossoblu as a free agent in October 2024, Balotelli has struggled to make an impact, accumulating just 56 minutes across six substitute appearances. The 34-year-old forward, once a prolific star for Manchester City and the Italian national team, has found it difficult to secure a regular role in Genoa’s lineup.
Ghanasoccernet.com reports that Balotelli is evaluating his future at the club following this challenging spell. His prospects have further dimmed with the return of forwards Caleb Ekuban and Jeff Ekhator from injury, leaving Balotelli potentially even lower in the pecking order. Genoa’s manager Andrea Pinamonti remains the team’s preferred starter in attack, casting doubts over Balotelli’s chances of increased game time.
Amid these struggles, Balotelli is said to be weighing his options. Reports suggest he has garnered interest from Mexican club Cruz Azul, who are prepared to offer him a lucrative contract worth €2 million per season. A clause in his current deal allows either party to terminate the agreement prematurely, and Balotelli appears reluctant to accept a secondary role at Genoa until the contract’s natural expiration in June.
Should the former Italian international move to Cruz Azul, it could mark a fresh start in a new league, potentially reviving his career after a frustrating stint in Serie A.
