WATCH HIGHLIGHTS: How Black Stars’ AFCON 2025 Hopes Dimmed by Sudan’s Stinging Defeat

Date:

Ghana’s quest for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is in jeopardy after a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Sudan on Tuesday, October 15. The Black Stars stumbled in their qualifying campaign during matchday four, falling to the Falcons of Jediane in Libya.

The turning point came in the 62nd minute when Ahmed Hamed Mahmoud capitalized on a chaotic moment in the Ghanaian defense. A failed clearance led to a scramble in the box, allowing Mahmoud to tap into an empty net after a clearance from Gideon Mensah fell short.

Ghana nearly struck back when Inaki Williams volleyed a cross from Tariq Lamptey, but his effort sailed wide of the post. Despite pressing hard in the closing minutes, Otto Addo’s side couldn’t find the back of the net, sealing their fate with a 2-0 scoreline.

The defeat leaves Ghana in a precarious position, now needing favorable results from other matches while aiming for victories against Niger and Angola during the upcoming international break. Currently sitting third in Group F, the Black Stars have amassed just two points from four matches, with two draws and two losses.

The home side doubled their advantage just three minutes later, as Mohamed Abdelrahman outmuscled Mohammed Salisu to fire past Lawrence Ati-Zigi, leaving Ghana with a steep hill to climb in their quest for qualification.
