Business: Freight forwarders on charge on shipping lines

Date:

On Tuesday, freight forwarders in Tema began a protest against shipping companies in Ghana that they claimed were engaging in exploitative actions.

Together with the Ghana Association of Customs House Agents, the Ghana Freight Forwarders Association, the Ghana Customs Brokers Association, and a coalition of trade associations, the Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders (GIFF) convened at the GIFF’s premises to lay their demands to the authorities in Tema.

The organizers said that the purpose of the Tuesday, September 24, 2024, protest, which included people dressed in red clothing and holding placards reading things like “pay refunds promptly or abolish container deposits,” “Shipping lines and pirates, no difference just landing,” “Scrap local charged in US $,” and “Consumers are receiving the pains of traders,” among other things, was to draw attention to the unfair fees and practices imposed by shipping lines, which were having a detrimental effect on Ghana’s economy and businesses in the logistics and trade sectors.

“This demonstration has significant implications for the country’s economy and the future of Ghana’s shipping industry.” As stated by GIFF Vice Chairman Nana Asiamah Peprah.
