John Mensah, a former Black Stars captain, recalled the stress that came with selecting the team for the World Cup.
John Mensah, a former international for Ghana, claims that the pressure of waiting to be called up for the World Cup is worse than the pressure of leading the team.
According to John Mensah, players who were inactive during the season began to worry greatly about being left off of the World Cup roster, which put a burden on their shoulders.
John Mensah responded, “I don’t feel much pressure because if you are playing regularly at your club, the confidence is there,” when questioned by Host Yaw Ampofo-Ankrah if he ever felt burdened as the captain of the Black Stars in the World Cup.
He added, ”if you don’t play regular that is where you will feel like am I going to have a place in the team or are they going to call me to be part of the national team or not.”
“So that is what gives a bit pressure but if you are regular at club side, I think you are okay,” the former Sunderland player said.
For the Black Stars, John Mensah participated in the FIFA World Cups in 2006 and 2010.
