David Ocloo has reportedly resigned from his role as assistant coach of Asante Kotoko, just before the team’s crucial 1-0 win over their arch-rivals, Hearts of Oak, in the Ghana Premier League. His sudden departure has sparked speculation about the reasons behind his decision.
Ocloo first joined Asante Kotoko in September 2021 as part of a technical team led by Prosper Narteh Ogum and supported by John Eduafo. Together, they achieved remarkable success, guiding Kotoko to the Ghana Premier League title during the 2021/22 season. Their triumph was widely celebrated, solidifying Ocloo’s reputation as an astute tactician.
However, despite their success, the entire technical team took a break for the 2022/23 season under unclear circumstances. During this time, Ocloo transitioned to Hearts of Oak, one of Kotoko’s fiercest rivals. At Hearts, he initially served as an assistant coach before stepping into the role of interim head coach for a period.
Ahead of the 2023/24 season, Ocloo returned to Asante Kotoko, reuniting with the technical staff in his familiar role as assistant coach. His return was seen as a significant boost for the club, given his previous contributions to their success.
The timing and nature of Ocloo’s resignation have left many fans and pundits questioning the factors behind his decision. While the reasons remain undisclosed, some speculate it could be linked to internal challenges within the club, personal ambitions, or potential offers from other teams.
As of now, it is uncertain if Ocloo has immediate plans to take on a new coaching role elsewhere. His resignation leaves a gap in Kotoko’s technical bench, raising concerns about the team’s stability as they navigate the ongoing season.
