Ghana’s 100m record holder, Benjamin Azamati, has qualified for the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo after clocking 9.98 seconds (+1.2 m/s) at the McNabb Sprint Series.
The time is Azamati’s season best and places him joint 17th on the men’s 100m qualification list. It also marks his fourth career sub-10s performance under legal wind conditions.
Azamati, 26, is Ghana’s fastest man and a key member of the 4×100m relay team that set the national record of 38.07s at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, where he ran the back straight.
He recently withdrew from Ghana’s relay squad for the World Relays in Guangzhou to focus on qualifying individually in the 100m—a goal he has now achieved after reaching the semi-finals at Paris 2024.
Ghana has recorded nine wind-legal sub-10s performances in total. Azamati owns four, with Leo Myles-Mills and Aziz Zakari contributing two each, and Joseph Paul Amoah one.
