One of the most celebrated traditional clubs in Ghana’s football history, Okwahu United, has reached its golden jubilee.
Founded in June 1975, Okwahu United has produced a host of stars, whose names are etched in the footballing history books of Ghana.
A four-member committee was commissioned to pay courtesy calls on past chairmen and administrators of the famous club ahead of the club’s 50th anniversary celebrations in June.
Throughout its existence in five decades, fans and sympathizers have witnessed the rise, fall, and steady rebirth of the team.
The 50th anniversary logo dissects the identity of the club—with elements representing the ups and downs of the team.
The stool embedded in the heart of the figure 0 on the logo represents the tradition of the club and its rich history.
The general manager of the club, Nana Kwame Danquah, listed a number of legacy projects the club plans to undertake. The projects would be funded by “Golden Tickets”— a creative initiative by the leadership of the club.
1. Okwahu United dream of a return to their original home, Nkawkaw. The club, currently playing its home games in Koforidua, plans to build a home stadium in Nkawkaw.
2. Fund for retired players. As part of the celebrations, the club intends to set up a fund to support retired players of the club. This is to inspire the current and coming generations to commit their all for the club.
3. Clubhouse and office. Few traditional clubs such as Hearts of Oak can boast of a functioning clubhouse and office. Okwahu United plans to build a clubhouse and office to improve the running of the club.
The two-time FA Cup winners since their relegation to the third tier of Ghanaian football in 2017 have made a steady rise to the Access Bank Division League.
The club may have to regroup next season to stand a chance of qualification to the Ghana Premier League despite sitting third on the Zone Three table.
