Stuart McLaren joins GFA Talent

Date:

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has named Stuart McLaren as its new Talent Coach on a two-year contract, as part of its commitment to the FIFA Talent Development Scheme (TDS).

McLaren will work closely with GFA Technical Director Professor Joseph Kwame Mintah to drive Ghana’s Talent Identification and Development program, a critical component of FIFA’s global TDS initiative. The program falls under the oversight of FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development, Arsène Wenger.

In an official statement, the GFA emphasized McLaren’s key responsibilities:

“Talent Coaches play a pivotal role in shaping the future of football… McLaren will observe local matches, collaborate with coaches on long-term team goals, identify talent that fits Ghana’s football DNA, and deliver detailed evaluations to stakeholders.”

A Scottish-Australian, McLaren’s 16-year playing career includes spells at Perth Glory, Brisbane Roar, Sarawak FC, and Stirling Albion, among others. He transitioned into coaching with notable stints including:

  • Head Coach, Stirling Albion FC (2014–2016)
  • Assistant Coach, Ireland Senior Women’s Team
  • Head Coach, Scotland U-16 Boys (2016–2018)
  • Head Coach, Scotland Women’s National Team (2021)
  • Manager, Celtic FC U-18 (2022–2023)

He also served as a Coach Educator and Development Manager for the Scottish FA, equipping him with the skills needed to deliver impactful youth development in Ghana.

The FIFA Talent Development Scheme is fully funded by FIFA, with $200 million allocated globally for the 2023–2026 cycle. It aims to build elite youth academies, develop young players, and raise coaching standards in member associations like the GFA.
