Spain is renowned for producing the best sporting athletes in the world, especially when it comes to football, dominating world and continental championships.
From past Spaniards winners of the Balon d’Or, from former FC Barcelona player Luis Suárez Miramontes to the current winner Rodrigo Hernandez (Rodri) of Manchester City, the country not only has dominated in the men’s game but the women’s too.
The legendary Alfredo de Stefano, though not of Spanish origin, is another Spaniard who won the coveted individual trophy while playing for Real Madrid in the 1960s.
Rodri was extremely instrumental in Spain’s success at the 2024 European Championship (Euros) in Germany by overcoming the Three Lions of England in the final.
Another Spaniard to have won at the glamorous gala, though of Moroccan origin, is Lamine Yamal, who won the Kopa Trophy for being the best footballing youngster in the world.
FC Barcelona Femeni player Aitana Bonmati won her second consecutive Balon d’Or. This follows her club and country teammate Alexia Putellas’ back-to-back Balon d’Or titles.
With fast-rising young stars in Spain such as Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams (whose move to a bigger club may aid him win the title), Spain can definitely boast of the best and hope for more to come.
