The disputed King of African dancehall music, Shatta Wale, has once again sparked controversy after he released his new Afrobeats track “Jo Lese.”
The song, which was released on Thursday, 30th January, immediately became a topic, as many critics were expecting more dancehall music from Shatta after Vybz Kartel conferred on him the King of African dancehall music.
Some critics expressed disappointment that Shatta Wale was not living up to the title given to him.
In light of this, Sammy Flex, manager of the embattled artist, in an interview with Max FM after the release of the track, said Shatta Wale was a versatile artist.
According to him, Shatta Wale, since the inception of his career, has released songs from various genres, including gospel songs.
“Anyone who had followed Shatta Wale’s career for long could tell that Shatta Wale is not that one-way artist. He has been versatile ever since he started his music. Sometimes he does hip-hop, highlife, and dancehall; in fact, he has done some gospel songs,” he said.
Sammy Flex lauded Shatta Wale for blending genres to entertain fans from all walks of life.
Throwing more light on the new track “Jo Lese,” he said the title simply means “Dance,” and it was Shatta’s unique way of sending fans and music lovers to the dance floor before “we” would enter February.
He said after the release of “African Mandiba”—a dancehall track that documented Shatta’s experience when he visited Jamaica—the artist wanted to explore other genres to give it to fans back-to-back.
