The Ghana Police Service and the Naaga Traditional Area are mourning the loss of a distinguished son and patriot, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Retired) Charles Awini, who passed away on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital at the age of 73.
Born in 1951, Charles Awini dedicated his life to public service, law enforcement, and community development. His career in the Ghana Police Service earned him wide respect for his discipline, leadership, and integrity.
In retirement, he continued to inspire many, particularly within the Naaga Traditional Area in Ghana’s Upper East Region.
His passing has drawn heartfelt tributes from traditional authorities, the Catholic Church, former colleagues in the police service, and a host of institutions including the National Ambulance Service, Ghana Police Academy Intake 30 Association, and civil society leaders.
A funeral mass will be held on Thursday, July 31, 2025, at St. George Catholic Church, Tesano, followed by the transfer of his remains to Naaga, his hometown. The final burial and thanksgiving rites will be observed there, with the burial mass taking place on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at St. Charles Lwanga Catholic Church.
ACP Awini’s life was not only marked by service in uniform but also by devotion to faith and family. He is survived by children including C/Insp. Philip Awini of the Ghana Police Service, as well as several grandchildren, siblings, nephews, and nieces.
The announcement of his passing and the celebration of his life has been led by Naaga’s traditional rulers, the Catholic clergy, members of the Ghana Police Service, and extended family.
He is remembered as a man of discipline, humility, service, and unwavering commitment to the people he served. His legacy will live on in the institutions he helped shape and the family he leaves behind.
