Partey Denied Entry Into Canada Due to Rape Charges

Date:

Thomas Partey is expect not to feature for the Black Stars of Ghana against Panama next Wednesday, June 17, 2026, in Toronto.

Partey, 33, according to The Athletic, has been refused entry into Canada for Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup Group L opener against Panama.

Reports indicate that this is due to the current rape charges hanging over his head, to which he is yet to stand trial.

FIFA, just as their stance in the case of Referee Omar Artan, will not get involved in a host country’s immigration policy.

FIFA’s statement to The Athletic states, “FIFA can confirm that player Thomas Partey will be unable to travel from Ghana’s team base camp in Boston, USA, to Canada for their first match against Panama on Wednesday, 17 June, as his visa application has been refused by the Canadian government.

FIFA is not involved in the immigration processes of host countries, including the adjudication of visas. As with previous FIFA events, the host government ultimately determines who receives a visa and is admitted into the country.”

The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) are more focused on ensuring the safety and security of Canadians, and cannot grant exceptions to any other.

Partey’s inclusion into the squad drew up heated debate from international bodies. Former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan even waded in the conversation, advising him to withdraw from the competition.

Thomas Partey is set to appear before the Southwark Crown Court on June 8, 2027, to fight charges of rape and sexual assault.
