Health Minister: Nose Mask Wearing, Social Distancing Are Compulsory

On Tuesday, the Minister of Health Mr Kwaku Agyemang-Manu, said social distancing impedes productivity at the workplace, however it is critical for containing COVID-19.

The Minister of Health stressed that nose mask-wearing and social distancing are compulsory.

“We need to adhere to the advice we are given on COVID-19 – wash your hands,” he said, adding; “SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, will stay with us indefinitely; therefore, we must strictly adhere to the preventive protocols to remain safe.”

Speaking at a press briefing on the latest coronavirus management situation in Ghana, the Health Minister, said: “We should make up our minds that our way of life is going to change for a very long time.”

According to the Ghana Health Service the COVID-19 case tally in Ghana spiked to 2,719 on Monday with 294 recoveries and 18 fatalities.

“Stay at home if you don’t have any essential business to do in town to avoid the spread of COVID-19,” Mr Agyemang-Manu warned, saying; ”If we don’t stay home, we will continue to spread the disease.”

He said the idea of “I don’t have money to buy face mask” should not be an excuse for anybody not to wear a mask and that; “Wearing of face masks in public will continue to be our way of life to contain the spread of COVID-19.”

“Do not take off the mask when you are talking, do not use a cloth mask for more than 12 hours.”

He cautioned the public to be careful with doorknobs, which should be sanitised once somebody touched it.

“It is not by individual choice to adhere to the COVID-19 safety protocols, it is in our collective interest.” “If you are not sick, stay at home, if you don’t have anything important to do outside, stay at home.”

The Minister entreated the public to stop turning away personnel doing contact tracing in the COVID-19 exercise.

The Director of Health Promotion, Ghana Health Service, Dr Dacosta Aboagye warned that it was dangerous to try facemasks on when buying them.

He advised that people visiting the premises of media houses must wear a mask and “media practitioners must wear face masks both in their offices and on the field.”

The Food and Drugs Authority said it had registered over 41 manufacturers of face masks and urged producers to use only cotton or breathable fabrics to make three-layer masks.

Dr Patrick Kuma Aboagye, the Director-General of Ghana Health Service, said as Ghana continues to battle the spread of the coronavirus, about 54 children are reported to have died from Malaria during the period.

GMA: Stop Rambo Style of Picking Coronavirus Patients From Home

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has expressed its discomfort at the ‘Rambo style” in which persons suspected to have contracted coronavirus are picked from their homes.

The GMA revealed that this has created stigmatization in their homes and in their communities, insisting it should be changed.

Dr. Titus Beyuo, the Deputy General Secretary of the GMA, made the observation in an interview on a TV station on what should be done to avoid stigmatization among patients of the novel coronavirus.

“Picking people in a Rambo style is increasing the stigmatization. We should pick people discretely instead of storming their homes and vicinities with ambulances to create the impressions that the person has gotten the virus,” he urged.

Dr. Beyuo said “we should not portray it. We can go with a normal car or we can call them to invite them to the hospital because the practice of storming there with ambulance puts fear in the people and the country”.

“The picking and treating of the patients should be changed. They are put in an ambulance and that create the stigmatization,” he explained.

He called for an education on the stigmatization since most people have negative conception about the virus.

“We should educate people that it’s a flu which can be treated and be free”.

GHS: Ghana’s Coronavirus Case Count Rises To 3,091 With 303 Recoveries

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has stated that Ghana has recorded 372 more novel Coronavirus cases, making the total case count now 3,091.

Nine more patients, as of May 7, 2020, have recovered and been discharged making the total number of recoveries 303.

According to the GHS update, the death toll is still 18.

Reports reaching www.maxfmlive.com indicates that the GHS has revealed that a total of 137,924 tests have been done so far.

The Bono region becomes the latest of the 16 regions to record its first case.

The Savannah, Ahafo and Bono East remain the only regions in Ghana yet to record a case.

Joseph Yamin: Ghana Premier League (GPL) Must Be Continued

According to Joseph Yamin, a Former Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports, and Culture, he has noted that the Ghana Premier League (GPL) season must be allowed to continue.

The 2019/2020 football season in Ghana in West Africa has been suspended for the past 2 months as a result of the Coronavirus (Covid-19) crisis.

There have been divided opinions, in the past few weeks, as to what should happen to the Ghana Premier League (GPL) season and the other league in the midst of the Covid-19 situation.

Joseph Yamin, speaking in a radio interview, has gave his take stressing that the GPL should be continued.

“I don’t see why the league should be canceled. The GPL must be played irrespective of the fact that other African countries have canceled theirs. Unless someone convinces me as to why the league should be canceled”, the former deputy sports minister said.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) continues to do deliberations on the next line of action and will declare the fate of the football season in 2 weeks’ time.

 

 

 

 

Vivian Jill: There Is No Expiration Date To Marriage, Don’t Allow Anyone Pressurize You

According to Ghanaian actress Vivian Jill, people should stop putting pressure on her to get married because marriage doesn’t have a timetable.

Vivian Jill, who was speaking in a recent interview on an Accra-based Fm station, revealed that people often ask her why she is not married especially considering her age.

Vivian explained that her love for privacy prevents her from showcasing her relationship to the public.

According to the mother of two, she believes there is time for everything and marriage will surely happen at its perfect time.

She recounted how people were eager to know the father of her son when she gave birth for the second time, but to her, it’s none of anyone’s business.

 

 

Tagoe Sisters: Modern Ghanaian Pastors Don’t Support Gospel Musicians

Tagoe Sisters, the Veteran gospel duo, are not happy about the lack of support for rising and mainstream gospel musicians in Ghana.

Known for the “Anka Matete” hit song, the Tagoe Sisters made this known during an interview on “Ofie Kwanso” on an Accra-based FM station.

According to the Tagoe Sisters, they had good support from the late Francis Akwasi Amoako when they were rising but things have changed.

“We are not getting the necessary support from our pastors of today,” they told Abeiku Santana. “It looks like our effort doesn’t matter to them anymore. When you are done singing, that is it.”

They said financial support is one of their biggest headaches and even when they make an effort to record, pastors do not support them to market.

“Formerly, when we are offered money after a performance, we hardly accept it because money isn’t our motive. We thought it was a sacrificial job. But we came to realise that financial support was needed to push our talent. We spend money on almost everything so it’s needed.”

“Even after spending your own money to record, pastors refuse to help sell in their churches,” they added.

 

Education Ministry To Private Schools: Your Donation To The COVID-19 Fund Was Unnecessary

Vincent Ekow Assafuah, the Director of Communications of the Ministry of Education, has said it was needless for the Ghana National Association of Private Schools (GNAPS) to donate an amount of GHC50,000 to the COVID-19 Trust Fund when they are financially struggling.

The Ministry PRO, speaking on an Accra based FM station on Friday, May, 01, 2020, said the move was a misplaced priority, adding “that money could’ve been used to support individual member institutions in the private schools”

The PRO of the Ministry of Education stressed:”I think the leadership should rise to the occasion in these times to ensure that they fight for their members and not necessarily sitting on radio and crying for stimulus package”

On Tuesday, April 28, 2020, the Private Schools Association made the donation at the Information Ministry’s press briefing.

The Association in a statement said the donation was in recognition and appreciation of the government’s efforts in the fight against the pandemic.

“The Ghana National Association of Private Schools (GNAPS) hereby presents its widow’s contribution to the COVID-19 Fund in recognition and appreciation of the Government’s commendable efforts geared towards combating this pandemic. Admittedly, this amount is a drop in the vast ocean of resources that the Government needs to fight this virus.”

However, NAPS said it could have done better if all was well with its members.

“And if all was well with private schools, we could have done a lot better than donate this paltry amount. But all is not well with private schools,” it added.

It thus asked the government to extend portions of the interest-free loans to the private schools to help them keep their institution running and also be able to pay their staff.

“Government must consider extending some interest-free loans to private schools to pay their staff and keep the institutions running until schools reopen. The loans could be repaid over a period of time when schools reopen. We also welcome the government’s intervention to persuade SSNIT, GRA and banks to which private schools are indebted, to postpone repayment of these statutory obligations and debts until our businesses reopen. We believe this is not too much to ask of Government.”

Reacting to this, Assafuah revealed that the Association up till date has failed to submit any formal request to that effect, insisting it would be very difficult for the Ministry to assist in the absence of any documentation.

“How do you want Deputy Minister of Education, Dr. Osei Adutwum to help you, when there has not been any document on his table but yet you go about, sit on the airwaves and beg for stimulus package? he queried.

 

Christopher Nettey: This Season’s Ghana Premier League (GPL) Is Very Competitive

According to Asante Kotoko defender Christopher Nettey, this season’s Ghana Premier League (GPL) was proving to be competitive before it was suspended due to coronavirus pandemic.

All football activities in Ghana was halted by the GFA following the outbreak of the deadly coronavirus as part of measures to curb the rapid spread of the disease.

Christopher Nettey has been one of the consistent performers for Asante Kotoko and has propelled them to third on the league table with 25 points, just three points adrift leaders Aduana Stars.

Ashanti Gold SC are just three points adrift Aduana Stars, only four points separate 6th place Medeama from 10th place, Great Olympics with just three points also separating 11th place, Inter Allies and 15th place, Legon Cities.

Christopher Nettey said that  “This season was proving to be the most competitive in recent years until it was suspended ”

“Unlike the past years where a club could have been leading the league by a wider margin at this stage of the competition, the build-up of this year’s is very close.

“The competition is very intense at the top, middle, and even at the bottom and just one win or slip could change a lot.”

John Mahama: I Will Grow Ghanaian Businesses If Elected President

According to John Dramani Mahama, he will prioritise Ghanaian businesses and stimulate them to grow and expand into other areas out of commerce if he becomes President again in 2021.

Mr John Mahama said that his government will encourage and provide the needed support for Ghanaians to venture into areas of manufacturing and agribusiness to help boost the economy.

Former president John Mahama said this to respond to a question on the measures he will adopt to revamp and sustain the economy during a Live Facebook interaction with Ghanaians on Thursday, 30 May 2020.

The NDC flagbearer said: “One of the things that I want to do is to encourage Ghanaian businesses because over the years the share of Ghanaian business in our GDP has consistently fallen. In the 70s, the share of Ghanaian business in our GDP was 72 percent. Today, I believe it is somewhere around 40 percent and so it means that a greater share of our GDP is in the hands of foreigners than Ghanaians. And so, we are going to prioritise Ghanaian businesses and stimulate Ghanaian business to be able to grow and expand into other areas out of commerce.

“A lot of our people are into commerce. We need to go into manufacturing, we need to go into agribusiness and we’re going to use the strength of the government’s purchasing power to make sure that we’re able to stimulate these industries and get Ghanaians to go into these areas.”

President Akufo-Addo: A ‘Weaker Response’ To COVID-19 Would Have ‘Jeopardised’ Economic Gains

According to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, he took robust and drastic measures which included the closure of the borders, as part of the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic because, in his view, a weaker response would certainly threaten the lives and livelihood of Ghanaians.

President Akufo-Addo revealed that the impact of COVID-19 cannot be underestimated, hence the tough measures he adopted.

Speaking in the studios of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) on May Day, President Akufo-Addo said: “As government and social partners, it is our collective responsibility to chart our own course out of this pandemic”.

“It is obvious that a weak response to COVID-19 will jeopardise the gains made to create a buoyant economy and will worsen the lives and livelihood s of all Ghanaians.”

President Akufo-Addo also said he has charged Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to work with the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to draft a policy that will further strengthen the industry and the agriculture sectors of the economy to mitigate and fix the economic damage done by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In his May Day message to Ghanaian workers, He said his administration is determined to deal with the economic impact of the pandemic through innovative ways.

Mr Akufo-Addo said: “Discussions are ongoing with the World Bank to raise more funds which should be completed soon”.

“I have charged the Minister of Finance to work with the Bank of Ghana to design innovative policies and find more resources to strengthen the productive sectors of the economy, particularly industry and agriculture. I understand that the process will shortly yield positive results.”

He added: “The Minister of Finance and his South African counterpart are leading the efforts of African ministers of finance to take debt reliefs for our economies.

“The World Bank has granted a debt repayment standstill for the next nine months, which will result in our delayed principal interest payments totalling $500 million.”

Mr Akufo-Addo further said that job creation is a priority for his government.

He said several measures have been taken to create jobs for Ghanaians and, or, create the enabling environment for Ghanaians to create jobs and wealth for themselves.

“Job creation is one of the priorities of this government,” he said, adding that it is a social contract with the people, hence bold steps have been taken to that effect.

President Akufo-Addo applauded workers for their contributions toward nation-building as Ghana joins the rest of the world to celebrate them.

“We recognise and appreciate the efforts and sacrifices they have made toward the construction of the happy and prosperous Ghana we seek, and, on this day, I say Ayekoo to each one of you,” Nana Akufo-Addo said.
