Kurt Okraku: C.K Akonnor Deserved To Be Coach of The Black Stars

Kurt Okraku, the President of the Ghana Football Association, has revealed that he has no ‘doubt’ C.K Akonnor was the right man to lead the Black Stars following the departure of Kwesi Appiah.

According to Kurt Okraku, C.K Akonnor went through the mill to reach the top and believes he fully deserves to be coach of the Black Stars.

“First of all coach Kwesi Appiah exited and we had to decide on who to give the responsibility to, the council considered a few names, lots of circumstances were also considered, and then we decided on C.K Akonnor,” Kurt Okraku said .

“I think that C.K AKonnor has paid his dues when it comes to football, played here in the premier league for Okwahu United and Ashantigold, went to Germany played twelve years thereabout in the Bundesliga, captained Wolfsburg, captained our own national team, came back here coached Hearts of Oak, Eleven Wise, Dreams FC, Ashantigold and Asante Kotoko.

“He’s had varied levels of experience as a trainer and if there is somebody who deserves the opportunity, it is someone who has dedicated himself to the national course. He’s risen to the highest level, played at the highest level and coached at the highest level.”

NDC National Youth Organizer: Govt Shouldn’t Rush Into Reopening Schools Amid Coronavirus

George Opare Addo , who is  the National Youth Organizer of the largest opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has said any attempt at reopening schools anytime soon amid the coronavirus pandemic is a plan by government to achieve an ulterior motive.

Speaking in a discussion segment on an Accra-based TV station, Mr. Opare Addo said that such preparations by the ruling government is never the best and must not be encouraged.

” . . plans by government to reopen schools anytime soon is an agenda to set a common goal that the pandemic is no more with us which is never true. Government is just setting ways to achieve its political gains,” Opare Addo said.

The National Youth Organizer of the NDC further wondered how children could hold out against the disease that is even very difficult for adults to withstand.

“Seriously I can’t imagine how a child will be quarantined for two weeks, can this be possible in our part of the world,” he asked.

Mr. Opare Addo also stressed that the risk of contracting Coronavirus in Ghana is still high and the government should “not rush” into reopening schools.

 

Sammi Awuku: Some Political Factions Are Excited Over Death Toll And Not Recoveries

Samuel Awuku, the National Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called on some political factions and opposition parties to join the country to celebrate over the Coronavirus recoveries rather than praying for more deaths tolls.

According to Samuel Awuku, these parties are wishing that the sitting government fails in its fight against the Coronavirus pandemic to suit their propaganda purposes.

In an interview on an Accra-based radio station, Samuel Awuku made this comment “We have recorded an excess of 5000 cases of COVID-19 with more recoveries and really low deaths but some political factions are not glad about the recoveries. They are just excited over the deaths.”

He, when speaking about the sitting government’s efforts in the COVID-19 fight, acknowledged that the government had done extremely well.

“The government has done a great job in the fight against COVID-19 especially with educating the public.”

He advised Ghanaians to treat the COVID-19 pandemic with all seriousness. “The virus is not a myth and the statistics we see on our television sets are not telling us the time. They represent human lives. ”

Ghana, as at today, has recorded 6,096 COVID-19 cases with a total of 31 deaths.

Numbers of persons who have recovered from the virus are pegged at 1,773 people with 4,292 active cases.

GHS: Ghana’s Coronavirus Case Count Increases To 6,486 With 1,951 Recoveries Now

The Ghana Health Service (GHS), in an announcement last Wednesday, has revealed that Ghana’s COVID-19 case count has risen to 6,486 from the 6,269.

According to the Ghana Health Service (GHS), the latest update represents 217 new cases confirmed in the country.

It also indicates that 53 more persons have recovered from the virus, bringing the total number of recoveries to 1,951.

The Greater Accra region is still leading the chart with 4,699 cases, followed by the Ashanti region with 988 cases.

As of Friday, May 22, 2020, the death toll remains at 31.

Ghana’s total active cases of COVID-19 is now at 4,504.

The cases in the Western and Central regions has increased to 195 and 287 respectively.

Savannah, Ahafo and Bono East regions remain the three regions out of the 16 regions in Ghana yet to record a case of the novel Coronavirus.

Eid-al-Fitr: Monday, May 25 Declared A Public Holiday By Govt

The Interior Ministry has said that Monday, May 25 is to be observed as a statutory public holiday.

The day marks the Eid-al-Fitr celebration by Muslims worldwide to mark the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting.

In its statement, the Interior Ministry said: “The general public is hereby notified that Sunday, 24th May, 2020, marks Eid-al-Fitr which is a Statutory Public Holiday.

“However, 24th May, 2020, falls on a Sunday and by Executive Instrument (E.I), His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Ghana, in accordance with section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, 2001 (601) has declared Monday, 25th May, 2020 as a Public Holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country,” the statement read further.

According to Eno Barony, Ghana’s self acclaimed best female rapper, her constant release of diss songs and the ongoing beef with fellow musicians has increased her fanbase massively.

The comment by Eno Barony comes amid the release of counter diss songs by some rappers in Ghana that has left some fans anxious and eagerly awaiting to expect the unexpected.

Eno Barony, speaking on a radio station in Cape Coast, was asked if she has gotten more followers because of her diss songs.

She said “Oh definitely even though the sea looks huge, it still allows rain to fall into it.

“Definitely, whilst we continue to work tirelessly we also pray that our songs will reach higher heights and our projects will go further.

“So everyday you gain somebody who likes you. I mean the more the songs trend the more you get new fans”, she concluded.

 

 

AY Poyoo: My Mother Wanted Me To Be A Doctor

AY Poyoo, a comedian and internet sensation, has recounted how he did not succumb to his mother’s pressure of becoming a medical doctor.

According to AY Poyoo, though his mother expected him to get into the ‘medical seat’ someday, he chose the path of music and comedy for himself.

AY Poyoo, in an interview, said “When I started, my mother wanted me to be a doctor. She wasn’t interested in what I was doing. She wasn’t in agreement that I chose to fool instead of being a doctor.”

According to the “new face of GH rap” his mother is still proud of him regardless.

“My mother is very proud, she is very happy about my craft,” he added.

AY Poyoo, meanwhile, has been on the lips of many, particularly, social media fans ever since he joined the entertainment industry.

Haven tasted fame for the first time, AY said he never dreamt of being this popular.

“Sometimes when I look at myself on the screen I ask myself is this really me? What about me is so special that people are so excited about?” he established.

GHS: Coronavirus Case Count In Ghana Rises To 6,096 With 1,773 Recoveries

Following the confirmation of 178 new cases, the COVID-19 case count in Ghana has risen to 6,096.

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) confirmed this in its latest update on Tuesday night [May 19, 2020].

The latest GHS figures also indicates 1,773 recoveries from the virus, representing an increase of 19 from the last update.

The number of deaths remains at 31 as of May 19, 2020.

The update indicated that there had been an increase in the number of cases in four regions – Greater Accra, Ashanti, Central and Western Regions.

The Greater Accra Region still has the highest number of confirmed cases, followed by the Ashanti, Central and Western Regions.

NBSSI: 5% Interest Rate On Stimulus Package For SME’s Is The Best To Offer

Kosi Yankey Ayeh, Executive Director for the National Board for Small Scale Industries (NBSSI), has said that the 5% interest rate per annum on loans placed on Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) as part of government’s intervention to support businesses that may be forced to fold in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic, is the best offer to give.

According to the NBSSI, the average tenure for repayment of the loan, which will be between a 2 to 3-year period, will be feasible considering the current market and times.

Speaking on an Accra-based FM station on Monday, May 18, 2020, Kosi Yankey Ayeh said  “This is actually a good interest rate considering what is on the market and it is important to note that this interest rate was selected because we are in an emergency situation where people do not have access to credit facilities so this will become a relief to support businesses to do better and be sustainable their operations at a time like this.”

Kosi Yankey Ayeh, earlier on, announced the introduction of an online portal for small scale businesses to file their application for the loan to be disbursed.

Many experts in the industry have argued that the modalities for the disbursement of the loans be set out properly and devoid of partisan politics so as to achieve the intended goal for SMEs to scale up in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Health Minister: Lockdown Won’t Work During This Coronavirus Pandemic

The Health Minister, Kwaku Agyemang Manu, has suggested a general or partial lockdown does not seem to be in the books of government as part of measures to fight the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to the Health Minister, the recent partial lockdown of Greater Accra and Greater Kumasi has taught government a lot of things per the severe impact it had on the nation.

The Health Minister further advised that all that people have to do now is to learn to live with the disease by following the laid down protocols.

Kwaku Agyemang Manu, answering a question as to whether Obuasi will be on lockdown due to the high number of coronavirus cases it has recorded at the just ended Ministry of Information press briefing, said he does not believe a lockdown would work any longer.

He said “generally, a lockdown is not something that we believe is going to work any longer. Now we have realized the lockdown taught us a lot of things and the impact is quite severe. So what we have to do now is to learn to live with the disease.”

However, the Director General of the Ghana Health Service was in Obuasi with a group of epidemiologists.

He said until they come back with their report “we must be very careful as to whether we are talking about a lockdown in Obuasi.”
