A District Court in Mamponteng has granted bail to an Osei Kyeretwie Senior High School (OKESS) student and his stepfather in a case involving unlawful possession of a firearm.
Presided over by Natacha Abena Tuffour, the court granted the 16-year-old student GH¢50,000 bail and his stepfather, Daniel Owusu Baafi, GH¢30,000 bail. Both are to provide two sureties each.
For the student, one must be a government worker or senior staff earning at least GH¢4,000 monthly; for Baafi, the threshold is GH¢3,000.
The case, which has been adjourned to June 17, stems from a May 14, 2025, incident where a locally made pistol was found on the student by an assistant headmaster on campus.
He was handed over to the police, leading to the arrest of his stepfather—a pastor—whom the student claimed owned the weapon.
Police prosecutors said both suspects were previously granted police enquiry bail before being charged under Section 192 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), which prohibits unlawful firearm possession.
In his caution statement, the stepfather denied owning the gun, claiming it belonged to his late uncle and was taken from the uncle’s room by the student.
