MAX TV’S U-23 AFCON UPDATES: Black Meteors must be calm – Yaw Acheampong

Date:

Former Black Meteors defender, Yaw Acheampong, has advised the current Black Meteors not to allow the pressure they’re encountering to affect them negatively as they prepare for their must-win group stage game against Guinea on Friday,30th  June 2023.

The Black Meteors face a possible elimination from the U-23 AFCON if they fail to win their third group-stage game against Guinea, a result that could see them miss out on the Paris 2024 Olympic games in Paris, further extending their absence from Olympic football, with their most recent appearance at the games been 2004 in Athens.

Yaw Acheampong, a bronze-winning medalist with the Black Meteors at the Barcelona 1992 Olympic games, in an interview with Max FM, advised the U-23 players to keep their heads up and not allow themselves to relent to the increasing pressure from Ghanaians.

“The 5-1 defeat to Morocco in our second group game reminded me of our 6-1 loss to Germany in 1993 during my playing days. It was one of those days where nothing goes well for the entire team,” Yaw Acheampong said.

Talking about how the Black Meteors should approach their must-win game against Guinea, the former Black Stars player chimed, “We shouldn’t let the pressure of the game affect us negatively going into the game, we must be calm.”

Ghana will be hoping to seal qualification to the next round of the competition, an achievement that could give them a ticket to compete at the 2024 Olympic games in Paris. The Meteors beat Congo 3-2 in their first game before suffering a humiliating 5-1 defeat to host nation Morocco in the second game.
