MAX LIFESTYLE: Know the history behind birthdays

Date:

The calendar gave rise to annual celebrations and commemorations. Not much is known about the first birthday celebrations in history.

The earliest known birthday celebrations were for nobles and were performative social functions that celebrated the noble as a leader.

The first mention of a birthday came from Ancient Egypt, where large celebrations were put on for the Pharaoh. The date of birth was somewhat arbitrary for such celebrations.

The tradition of celebrating birthdays is a recent one. It emerged during the 19th and 20th centuries with the rise of consumerism and increased investment in children’s upbringing, leading to annual celebrations and gift-giving. The Industrial Revolution made ingredients for delicious cakes more obtainable and affordable for everyone, changing the way birthdays were celebrated.

Different cultures and religions have unique ways of celebrating important birthdays. For instance, Japan marks Coming of Age Day to honor those who turned 20 in the past year and entered adulthood. Jewish boys and girls have a mitzvah on their 12th or 13th birthday. Quinceañeras are celebrated in many Hispanic countries and Brazil to mark a girl’s transition into young adulthood on her 15th birthday.

Initially, Christians considered birthday celebrations to be a Pagan ritual and forbade them. However, around the fourth century, the celebration of the birth of Jesus began, and Christians started celebrating it to attract people who observed the Roman holiday of Saturnalia.

On this note, here are a few Bible quotes ideal for birthdays:

Psalm 139:14-16

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, and I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

John 16:21

A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come, but when her baby is born, she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world.

Psalm 22:10

From birth, I was cast on you; from my mother’s womb, you have been my God.

Jeremiah 1:5

Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you; before you were born, I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.

Psalm 71:6-8

From birth, I have relied on you; you brought me forth from my mother’s womb. I will always praise you. I have become a sign to many; you are my strong refuge. My mouth is filled with your praise, declaring your splendor all day long.

Ephesians 2:10

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Psalm 90:12

Teach us to number our days so that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

We hope these Bible verses will help you celebrate a loved one’s birthday. Consider adding them to a card or message. And if it’s your birthday today, happy birthday!
