MAX HEALTH: Your lifestyle can make you contract HIV – Advocate

Date:

An HIV/AIDS advocate, Linda Ewoenam Donkor, has cautioned Ghanaians against lifestyles that could contract and spread the human immunodeficiency virus infection.

According to her, many Ghanaians were leading a carefree life, which has made them contract the virus from many sources.

Speaking in an interview with Max Morning Agenda in Accra on Tuesday, Linda stated that the spread of HIV/AIDS keeps increasing each day due to the lifestyles of many people.

She noted that many Ghanaians have contracted the virus through unprotected sex from hookups or blind dates.

“With today’s social media, many are having hookups, and when they meet the person for the first time, they just have unprotected sex without thinking about the implications. Sex has become fun for them,” Linda lamented.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Auntie Linda Foundation also observed that some Ghanaians were patronizing the services of unprofessional manicurists who hawk on streets, mainly “Aboki” people, without checking if their cutters were sterilized or not.

“This has put many at risk of contracting HIV,” she said.

In moving forward, Linda advised Ghanaians to use the barrier method when having sex if they could not completely abstain from it and should also stop patronizing the services of unknown manicurists.

HIV condition, she said, could be treated for one to live a full life and not transmit it to others.

Linda charged Ghanaians to visit the nearest hospital for the free testing kits to know their status and get the necessary medical advice and treatment if it becomes necessary.

Per Ghana Health Statistics, a total of 354,927 people are living with HIV in Ghana. Out of the total, 115,235 are males, while 239,692 are females.
