President John Dramani Mahama has announced a reduction in the number of government ministries from 30 to 23, as part of efforts to enhance public service delivery and cut government operational costs.
The decision, revealed in an Executive Instrument dated January 9, 2025, fulfills a key campaign promise to streamline the government for greater efficiency and accountability. Mahama had committed to reducing the size of government to just 60 ministries, aiming to foster cost-effectiveness and a results-oriented administration.
Under section 11(3) of the Civil Service Act, 1993 (P.N.D.C.L. 327), the President has the authority to restructure ministries and agencies to improve the civil service’s efficiency. Consequently, several ministries have been merged.
This move is part of a broader agenda to reconfigure governance structures and boost the effectiveness of the public sector.
