The Accra Sports Stadium has been closed for maintenance as the National Sports Authority works to prepare it for potential hosting duties for Ghana’s upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Similarly, the Cape Coast Stadium is also under maintenance to be ready for October’s international fixtures.
This closure follows a ban on the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, which was prohibited from hosting Black Stars’ home games due to ‘technical infractions,’ including an unsuitable playing pitch.
As a result, Ghana’s four-time African champions are facing the possibility of playing their home games abroad, a significant setback for the country.
In the meantime, Ghana Premier League clubs Hearts of Oak, Accra Lions, and Dreams FC will need to find alternative venues for their upcoming top-flight matches. Last week, the Ministry of Youth and Sports directed the Ghana Football Association to request an inspection of both the Accra Sports Stadium and the University of Ghana Stadium by the Confederation of African Football for the October game against Sudan.
