Hiplife icon Maradona Adjei Yeboah, known as Guru NKZ, is back in the University of Ghana’s SRC presidential race after successfully challenging his earlier disqualification.
Guru’s disqualification stemmed from his non-resident status, violating Article 30, which requires candidates to be campus residents and eligible for a Junior Common Room (JCR) position in their hall. Both Guru and his running mate, Jeffery Adu Yeboah, were found to be non-residents, leading to their initial removal from the race.
Guru’s legal team filed a petition with the Electoral Commission and the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs, requesting a review of the decision. They also submitted an interim injunction to the Judicial Board to temporarily halt the electoral process pending a hearing.
On September 15, 2024, the Appeals Board unanimously overturned the disqualification, ruling 7-0 in favor of reinstating Guru and his running mate. The board directed that their names be added back to the list of presidential candidates.
Balloting for all vetted candidates is scheduled for Monday, September 16.
