Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has officially conceded defeat in the 2024 Presidential elections.
In a statement delivered to the press late Monday night, Dr. Bawumia acknowledged the outcome of the polls and extended his congratulations to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, John Dramani Mahama, who is poised to become the next President of Ghana.
“After reviewing the provisional results and in consultation with the leadership of the NPP, I accept the will of the Ghanaian people as expressed through their votes,” Dr. Bawumia stated. He further emphasized his commitment to peace and the democratic process, urging his supporters to remain calm and united as the nation transitions to a new administration.
Dr. Bawumia also expressed gratitude to his campaign team, party members, and the millions of Ghanaians who supported him during the election. “This journey has been an incredible honor, and I remain deeply committed to serving Ghana in whatever capacity I can,” he said.
The concession follows days of vote collation, during which the NDC maintained a significant lead based on provisional results. Although the Electoral Commission (EC) has yet to make its official declaration, Dr. Bawumia’s acknowledgment of the results signals a decisive moment in Ghana’s democratic history.
Political analysts have praised the gesture as a demonstration of leadership and respect for democratic norms, noting that such actions are crucial in fostering peace and stability during elections.
The NPP is expected to issue a formal statement outlining the party’s plans for the future and its role as the incoming opposition. Meanwhile, President-elect John Mahama is anticipated to address the nation to outline his vision for the next four years.
