Former Ghanaian international Charles Sampson has been appointed head coach of the national U20 women’s football team, the Black Princesses. His tenure begins with a crucial task: leading the team through qualifiers for the 2025 FIFA Women’s U20 World Cup.
Born on November 24, 1980, Sampson brings a wealth of experience from a distinguished playing career and a growing coaching résumé. He began his football journey with GHAPOHA FC in the Ghana Premier League before embarking on a successful stint abroad. In Greece, he played for clubs such as Kalamata FC, Apollon Kalamarias, OFI Crete, Panegialios, and Fostiras, showcasing his versatility and skill on the field.
Sampson’s European adventure extended to Sweden, where he joined Assyriska Föreningen in 2004. His contributions were instrumental in helping the team secure promotion to the Allsvenskan, Sweden’s top-tier league. He also played for other Swedish clubs, including Bodens BK, IFK Luleå, Syrianska Botkyrka, and Afrikansk, cementing his reputation as a dependable midfielder.
After retiring from professional football, Sampson transitioned seamlessly into coaching. He began his managerial career with Assyriska United Girls U15 and later took the reins at Telge United FC in the Swedish Women’s League. Upon returning to Ghana, he served as an assistant coach for the Black Queens, the senior women’s national team, gaining valuable experience on the international stage.
Sampson’s appointment is part of a broader effort to strengthen the technical leadership of the Black Princesses. His coaching team includes Fiifi Parker Hanson, head coach of Golden Kicks FC, and Anita Wiredu-Mintah, who continues her role as assistant coach. This dynamic team is tasked with nurturing talent, building cohesion, and steering the Black Princesses toward global success.
With his extensive background in international football and coaching, Sampson is poised to bring a fresh perspective to the Black Princesses as they prepare for their World Cup journey. His leadership is expected to inspire a new generation of Ghanaian footballers to excel on the world stage.
