Former US president, Jimmy Carter, popularly known for his humanitarian works, has passed on at the age of 100.
At his home in Georgia where he was born, Carter spent the last two years of his centenary life in hospice care. He has left a legacy described as many, beyond presidency.
He served in the US Navy during and after World War II after graduating from the US Naval Academy. Carter pioneered in nuclear submarine technology.
Carter managed to restore international relations between the US and China during his term in office as president between 1977 and 1981 before losing reelection to Ronald Reagan.
Some Americans, however, may remember him for his failed attempt to rescue American hostages in Iran, and the his inability to steer the economy, which was in turmoil.
Together with his wife Rosalynn, they founded The Carter Center, an organization committed to promoting peace, human rights, and health initiatives worldwide.
His pivotal roles in negotiating peace deals, overseeing elections in developing nations, and advocating for nuclear nonproliferation, post-presidency, earned him a Nobel Peace Prize award in 2002.
Carter accepted his fate after his cancer diagnosis in February 2023 to move to hospice care before losing his wife in November 2023.
