Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has announced he is stepping back from politics to focus on humanitarian efforts.
In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Gyan explained that his involvement with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was unfair to Ghana’s youth. He plans to dedicate his efforts to empowering young people through the Asamoah Gyan Foundation.
Earlier this year, Gyan supported Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign as chairman of the Youth and Sports Manifesto sub-committee. However, he has now decided to withdraw from partisan politics.
Gyan emphasized his commitment to continuing his humanitarian work without political influence and wished all parties a peaceful election on December 7, 2024.
Gyan is Ghana’s all-time top scorer with 51 goals.
