Gerardo “Tata” Martino has stepped down as head coach of Inter Miami CF, citing personal reasons, despite having a year left on his contract, sources tell ESPN.
The former Barcelona and Mexico coach will hold a final press conference on Friday, Nov. 22, alongside co-owner Jorge Mas and president of football operations Raúl Sanllehi.
Martino’s departure comes just weeks after Lionel Messi and Inter Miami were eliminated in the first round of the MLS playoffs by No. 9 seed Atlanta United FC in a best-of-three series.
Martino joined Inter Miami in June 2023, replacing Phil Neville, during a period of transformative changes for the club, including the signings of Messi, Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, and Luis Suárez. Under his leadership, Miami achieved remarkable success, winning the 2023 Leagues Cup, the 2024 Supporters’ Shield, and setting a league record for the most points in a single season during the 2024 campaign.
However, the team faced challenges in cup competitions, exiting the Concacaf Champions Cup in the quarterfinals and the 2024 Leagues Cup in the round of 16.
Co-owner David Beckham praised Martino during an end-of-season ceremony: “Tata, thank you very much for an incredible season. Thank you to your staff … gracias.”
