The National Sports Authority (NSA) has officially extended the mandate of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) Executive Board by 30 days, starting from July 19 to August 19, 2025.
This extension follows a meeting on Tuesday, July 15, between NSA leadership and the GBA interim board, led by acting president Roger Barnor. The decision was made to prevent an administrative vacuum and ensure continuity while key reforms are being implemented.
The GBA had initially proposed July 19 as the date for its elections, citing the expiration of the current administration’s tenure on July 22, following the resignation of former President Abraham Neequaye Kotey. However, the NSA opted for a delay to allow the full execution of the Ministerial Committee’s recommendations.
The committee was established to investigate the tragic death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju, who passed away on March 29, 2025, after a sanctioned bout in Ghana.
Official Statement from the NSA:
“The Authority is determined to implement the recommendations of the Ministerial Committee set up to inquire into the death of Nigerian Boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju, which occurred on 29th March, 2025.
In light of this, and to avoid a vacuum in the administration of the GBA, it has become necessary to extend the Executive Board’s mandate for 30 days pending the formation of an Interim Management Committee (IMC) to oversee reforms.”
“The Authority assures the GBA and the boxing fraternity of its commitment to collaborate effectively in implementing the recommendations aimed at improving safety and governance in Ghana boxing.”
