The Chairman of the MTN FA Cup Committee, Wilson Arthur, has attributed one of the reasons for crowd violence at match centres to betting.
The 2024-25 Ghanaian football season has been marred by hooliganism and scarred by the unfortunate stabbing of Asante Kotoko supporter Nana Pooley.
Wilson Arthur, a direct stakeholder in football (owner of Skyy FC), highlighted betting as one of the major contributors to hooliganism in Ghana.
“The investors’ interest is no longer just the game. It has now economic interest because when the match doesn’t go well, it brews anger, causing the bettor to attack a match official. The person would go scot-free, leaving the club to face sanctions instead,” Wilson Arthur shared on Max FM’s Sports Pack.
The new security and safety protocols by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) would be implemented in the round of 16 of this season’s MTN FA Cup to ensure the safety of all participants at match centres.
