Ballot counting is currently underway in the Ablekuma North Constituency, following the close of polls in Friday’s parliamentary rerun held across 19 polling stations.
The rerun aims to complete the electoral process that had been stalled since the December 2024 general elections.
The Electoral Commission (EC) had targeted over 6,000 eligible voters to bring finality to the long-standing dispute over the parliamentary seat.
While voting commenced peacefully at 7:00 a.m., tensions flared at the Methodist Church polling station in Odorkor, where a group of men attacked voters and party agents, including former MP Mavis Hawa Koomson. The violence caused a temporary halt in voting, which later resumed under enhanced security.
In separate disturbing incidents, Kwabena Agyekum Banahene, a journalist with GHOne TV, was assaulted by a police officer, and Salomey Martey of JoyNews was attacked
The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) swiftly condemned the attacks, describing them as “an affront to press freedom and Ghana’s democracy,” while calling for accountability and protection for media professionals covering elections.
Despite the scattered violence, most polling centres operated smoothly under heavy police presence. The rerun became necessary after legal challenges over disputed results and incomplete collation in the previous election cycle.
Final results from the Ablekuma North rerun are expected to be announced shortly as counting progresses.
